Our Bold Coast of Maine Tour features a day at Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada. It’s home to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park which is known as a “memorial to FDR and a symbol of cooperation between the US and Canada”. Our day begins with crossing the FDR bridge from Lubec, ME to Campobello Island.
Mulholland Point Lighthouse: Our first stop is Mulholland Point Lighthouse. It’s an octagonal lighthouse that has been standing guard over the Lubec Narrows since 1884. We often see seals, razorbills, various gulls and even eagles from the Point!
Roosevelt Campobello International Park In the 1880s, Campobello Island was home to many summer “Cottages” for wealthy families including the Roosevelts. Franklin Roosevelt spent many summers here as a child and throughout his life including during his presidency. Several of these “Cottages” are now preserved by the International Park and can be explored. We’ll take a tour of the Roosevelt’s Cottage and explore two more on our own. We’ll also take part in Eleanor’s Tea, where we learn about the incredible and inspiring life of Eleanor Roosevelt while sampling her favorite tea and cookies!
Herring Cove Provincial Park. Campobello Island is also home to Herring Cove Provincial Park and Head Harbor Lighthouse. We’ll explore Eagle Hill Bog with it’s unique plants like the carnivorous pitcher plant and beautiful Raccoon Beach.
Head Harbor Lighthouse aka “East Quoddy Head” Lighthouse At the further end of Campobello Island sits beautiful Head Harbor Lighthouse. It is only accessible during low tide. We saw seals and whales right from the shoreline on our last tour!
Campobello has so much to see and do and we can’t wait to share it with you!
