The Bold Coast of Maine tour features Coastal Hiking, Lighthouses, Wildlife, Kayaking, Quoddy Head Lighthouse and State Park, Cutler Preserve, Moosehorn Wildlife Refuge, Cobscook Bay State Park, Possible backpacking overnight on the Cutler Coast.

Description: The Bold Coast of Maine is a well kept secret! This pristine area is quiet, wild, beautiful and yes BOLD. The coastal cliffs are as rugged as they come with secret pebble coves. We'll hike several trails that lead us through thick forests and bogs to stunning overlooks and high cliff trails. We'll do a little ocean or inland paddling depending on the groups' desire. Cobscook Bay State Park will be our basecamp for this unique trip.

Itinerary

Cobscook Bay Bold Coast of Maine

Day 1

Depart Bangor, ME

We'll pick you up in Bangor, ME and drive Cobscook Bay to settle into our Basecamp for the week. Cobscook means “boiling tides” in the Passamaquoddy native language and the tidal range here is 24 feet! We’ll observe the dramatic tides coming and going while spotting eagles, seals and otters right from our campsite!

Day 2

Hike the Cutler Coast

Prepare yourself to be awed at every turn on this trail! The Cutler Coast is where the Bold Coast of Maine gets its name. Traverse through dense spruce and cedar forest carpeted with moss to sweeping views of rugged cliffs. Follow the coastline overlooking the Bay of Fundy past pebble beaches and unparalleled views. You might even spot a whale! Depending on the group's preference, a one day backpacking overnight may be included.

Campobello Island

Day 3

Campobello Island, Canada

Today we cross the bridge to and explore Campobello Island in Canada! We'll take a tour of FDR's Summer Cottage, enjoy "Eleanor's Tea", take a stroll throw a unique Bog, see several lighthouses, beaches and more! Don't forget to pack your passport!

Quoddy Head State Park Bold Coast of Maine

Day 4

Whale Watch and Quoddy Head State Park

In the morning, we'll take a small boat out into the Bay of Fundy to visit the "Old Sow", the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere and look for whales! In the afternoon, we head as for East as you can go in Maine, to Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec. This state park features a beautiful lighthouse, scenic hikes along ocean cliffs and through a bog that features rare carnivorous plants like the sundew and pitcher plant! It's all a birding hotspot so be sure to scan the shoreline and rocks just off the coast.

Machias Bay Kayaking

Day 5

Kayaking Machias Bay

We take to the water today with some with a unique kayaking tour out to see some petroglyphs on an island. See seals, eagles and more along the way. Not into kayaking? We'll go for a hike or explore historic downtown Machias. In the afternoon we'll sample some of the best pie in the state at Helen's restaurant.

Pulpit Rock Bold Coast of Maine

Day 6

Eastport and Pulpit Rock

We'll plan around the tides today as you can only reach unique Pulpit Rock at low tide. This shoreline hike is a beautiful stroll past sculpted red rocks. You'll see osprey coming and going from their nests as well as other shore birds. We'll also take in Shackford State Park and the town of Eastport.

Day 7

Return to Bangor

We'll take in on last glimpse of Cobscook Bay before packing up camp and heading back to Bangor to leave the Bold Coast of Maine behind. Depending on our timing, we'll have one last adventure on our way.
