Maine Mountains and Coast Itinerary
Saturday September 10th/17th
We’ll pick you up at 4PM and begin our journey to the Western Mountains of Maine. The small mountain town of Bethel will be our basecamp for the first 3 nights. We’ll get settled into our campground and enjoy a cookout and campfire.
Sunday September 11th/18th
Maine is home to beautiful lakes and rivers! We’ll kayak or canoe the Androscoggin River or two local lakes in the morning with a picnic lunch back at camp. In the afternoon, we’ll take to the mountains! Ride the scenic chairlift at Sunday River Ski Resort for wonderful views of the surrounding White Mountains as the fall colors begin to change. We’ll do some short hiking and also visit a beautiful covered bridge.
Monday September 12th/19th Grafton Notch State Park
Discover the beauty of the White Mountains and Grafton Notch State Park! We’ll take a hike that begins on the Appalachian Trail and ends at a beautiful granite outcropping called “Table Rock” with a beautiful view up and down the gorge, Grafton Notch. This is moose country, so we’ll be on the lookout for those majestic creatures. End the day at the Suds Pub and sample some local food and brews.
Tuesday September 13th/20th Acadia National Park
We’ll pack up camp in the morning and transfer to the coast! We’ll enjoy lunch at Sand Beach in Acadia National Park. From here you have several hiking options for the afternoon. Take the leisurely Ocean Path to hug the coastline and see the iconic pink Acadia cliffs up close. For more of a challenge, head up the Beehive Trail or Gorham Mountain for views of the coastline and surrounding mountains. Or, for a great combo, you can do all three! We’ll end the day with sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point along the entire East Coast!
Wednesday September 14th/21st Acadia National Park
Experience Acadia by boat, bike or hiking today. Your choice! We’ll set you up with a boat tour, bike rental or kayaking tour. Acadia is home to dozens of miles of old Carriage roads perfect for biking. Kayaking around the Porcupine Islands offers views of Bar Harbor and Frenchmen’s Bay. Or, hop on the free park shuttle and take in another hike. There are still dozens more we could recommend! We’ll dine out tonight in one of the many fine restaurants in Bar Harbor.
Thursday September 15th/22nd Camden/Rockland
In the morning we’ll head to the mid-coast area of Maine to Camden Hills State Park. Take in the views of Penobscot Harbor from Mt Battie which includes the village of Camden and on a clear day, Acadia! Visit Owl’s Head Lighthouse and walk the Rockland Breakwater, a unique stone jetty that juts out a mile into the Atlantic Ocean! We’ll camp in Camden Hills State Park near the ocean for the next two nights.
Friday September 16th/23rd Monhegan Island
It’s an early start today as we try and catch sunrise over Penobscott Bay right from our campground. Next we’ll take a ferry out to the truly unique Monhegan Island. Spend your day hiking, visiting galleries, or taking in the beautiful views of this enchanting island!
