May 18, 1980 is a day the people of Washington will always remember. Mt St Helens itself is awe inspiring, but viewing its path of destruction and the footage from that fateful day reminds us all of Mother Nature’s powerful forces. The eruption removed nearly 2000 ft off the peak, produced massive mudslides that destroyed thousands of acres of wilderness and even created two new lakes. Yet life on the mountain survived despite the violent event.
